‘Slap in the face’: Aussie act Rufus du Sol robbed by Beyonce at Grammys

An entire genre of music has railed against Beyonce’s record-breaking Grammys win — and an Aussie act was among the snubs.

Beyonce created history at the Grammys on Monday, collecting four awards to take her career tally to a record-breaking 32.

The music icon scooped up gongs for best R&B song, traditional R&B performance, dance recording and dance/electronic album — and it was her win in the latter category that had EDM fans up in arms.

Seeing the pop music queen join a list of electronic music legends like The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk and Basement Jaxx for her album Renaissance didn’t sit well with club and festival-goers.

Watching her awarded ahead of other nominees like Aussie act Rufus du Sol (Surrender), Odesza (The Last Goodbye), Bonobo (Fragments) and Diplo (Diplo) left thousands outraged.

One fan wrote: “Rufus absolutely robbed. Grammy politics, Beyoncé is not electronic music.”

“I’m sorry, but Beyoncé winning the best electronic album is absolute highway robbery,” another wrote. “What festivals has she headlined? Any b2b’s? This is just a slap in the face to Bonobo, Rufus Du Sol, Odesza, and Diplo.”

“How was Beyoncé even qualified for that category? Diplo, Rufus Du Sol, Odeza, Bonobo … and Beyoncé? For best dance/electronic album?” questioned another.

“Beyoncé winning best electronic dance music album over Odesza, Rufus and Diplo has to be the most comical thing to happen,” added fourth. “All love to Beyoncé but that’s not EDM whatsoever. I understand Beyoncé makes dance music. (But) with how big of a breakout the EDM scene and genre has had in the past few years though I think they should separate the categories so that artists that focus and give all their energy to that genre have a shot / feel appreciated.”

“Beyoncé winning EDM album of the year ahead of Rufus, Diplo, Odesza and Bonobo says everything you need to know about how unserious the Grammy’s have become,” wrote another.

Even Beyonce’s fans questioned the decision.

“Beyoncé won electronic/dance album of the year???? Lol I love Queen B, but over Odesza, Rufus, Diplo, actual electronic music artists?” one wrote.

“Look, Beyoncé is very talented but she’s NOT AN ELECTRONIC ARTIST and how dare the Academy look over all of the amazingly deserving electronic music producers in the Best Electronic Album category. Bonobo, Diplo, Rufus Du Sol and Odesza deserved better,” wrote another.

But others suggested the backlash showed the snobbery of the EDM scene.

“The amount of negative comments I’ve seen from some DJs and producers on Beyoncé winning Best Dance/Electronic album at the Grammys for Renaissance is absurd,” DY Yuki tweeted. “It’s entitled and further highlights that Dance is one of the most gatekept music genres today.”

It’s the second time a mainstream pop artist as claimed the award after Madonna’s win in 2007 for Confessions on a Dance Floor.

The night didn’t go all Beyonce’s way however as she was overlooked for the coveted album of the year award, which went to Harry Styles.
