THEY’RE the Hollywood pranksters of the red carpet who creep or leap into celebrities’ otherwise composed Oscars photos.
As selfies have permeated pop culture in the past several years, so too has the act of photobombing.
And even a glitzy event like the Academy Awards isn’t safe from background-dwelling assassins.
Actor and musician Jared Leto is a regular photobomber and has notched up countless Oscars victims, including Anne Hathaway, Kevin Spacey and Michael Keaton.
But Lupita Nyong’o got one back on him a few years ago and crashed his photo with Matthew McConaughey.
British thespian Benedict Cumberbatch says he was a bit tipsy when he decided to launch into the air behind a posing U2.
“Yes, I photobombed U2! But that was all Ellen DeGeneres’s fault because she plied everyone with vodka on the red carpet,” Cumberbatch told Time Out in the UK after the incident.
Footage of his carefully orchestrated bomb, set to the theme song from Jaws, quickly went viral.
“A friend really wanted me to get a photo with U2. So I just saw the opportunity and I’ve never felt an impulse like it,” he said.
“I spotted them all standing around and I thought, ‘Perfect!’ It wasn’t preordained or anything. I just did it.”
Ellen’s famed crowd selfie during her time hosting the Oscars in 2014 quickly went viral. There were a few people who desperately tried to get in but didn’t make it, including Liza Minnelli.
And Instagram in recent years has been flooded with celebrity selfies that have a sneaky star lurking in the background.
