IN a room filled with some of the most famous people in the world, a bunch of everyday tourists have managed to steal the show at the Oscars.
There were a lot of nervous side-glances when host Jimmy Kimmel announced that a Hollywood tour bus would be joining them in the Dolby theatre, explaining they’d been told they were just on a simple tour of Tinseltown.
“We told them we are coming into this building to see special exhibits of dresses and gowns,” Kimmel told the audience. “It is dresses and gowns, but they will be on people. The moment that we open the doors they will be on live TV and we are going to surprise them, OK?”
As secret cameras showed the unknowing tourists walking through the corridors of the auditorium, Kimmel said: “We spent many weeks and thousands of dollars figuring out how to get this done. If everyone stays very still, maybe we can make them think they’re at the wax museums or something.”
Armed with selfie sticks and their best pair of walking shoes, the tourists looked bewildered as they were herded straight past the Z to B-grade celebrities ... all the way up to the front row.
“Hello there! Hi! Welcome to the Dolby Theatre. This is the home of the Academy Awards, which are in fact happening right now,” Kimmel greeted them.
“Let me give you a little tour ... this is Nicole Kidman. Here’s Octavia [Spencer.] This is Ryan Gosling. He’s very handsome, don’t look into his eyes.”
This woman’s stunned face sums it up best:
When someone in the group revealed she was getting married, Kimmel even made Denzel Washington sign-up to being the best man before making Jennifer Aniston hand over husband Justin Theroux’s sunglasses as a wedding gift.
Another lucky gatecrasher was treated to a selfie with Mahershala Ali, who’d just nabbed his first-ever Oscar for his role in Moonlight.
And a lot of people at home were loving it.
