NOMINATIONS for the 88th Annual Academy Awards have been announced, with George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road leading Australia to a record haul of Oscar nominees.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences showered the great Australian filmmaker’s fourth instalment of the Mad Max franchise with 10 nominations.
Just Alejandro Inarritu and Leonardo DiCaprio’s collaboration, The Revenant, with 12, scored more nominations.
Adding to the Australian Oscar haul was Cate Blanchett, nominated for best actress for her romantic-drama Carol.
THE FIVE BIGGEST OSCAR NOMINATION SNUBS
The strong showing for The Revenant, including a best actor nod for DiCaprio himself, follows the film’s win at the 73rd Annual Golden Globes. It also sets up director Alejandro Inarritu for a possible back-to-back victory following his Best Picture win with Birdman last year.
DiCaprio graciously took home the award for Best Actor at the Golden Globes on Sunday night, but will 2016 finally be the year that Leo nabs an Oscar?
Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic The Martian landed seven nominations, including Best Picture, but no Best Director nod for Scott.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Hateful Eight, Inside Out and Straight Outta Compton were also snubbed.
Sylvester Stallone proved to be this season’s comeback kid, earning a nod for bringing Rocky back to the big screen in Creed, which follows his big Golden Globes win.
