Nicole Kidman, Sarah Snook and Kodi Smit-McPhee lead Australia’s hopes at the revived Golden Globe awards.

Kidman was recognised for her performance as American TV icon Lucille Ball in the Aaron Sorkin-directed Being the Ricardos while Adelaide-born Smit-McPhee was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his turn as a frail young man in Jane Campion’s acclaimed The Power of the Dog.

Another South Australian, Snook, was recognised for her consistently stellar performance as Shiv Roy in Succession, the HBO hit (available to watch on Binge) which also scored the most nominations in the TV category.

All up, Campion’s sexually-charged western scored seven nominations while Belfast, Kenneth Branagh’s drama set in his hometown during Northern Ireland’s “Troubles”, also landed seven nods.

New Zealander Campion and Branagh are also vying for best director and best screenplay, while their films are up for best drama.

Alongside Smit-McPhee, British actor Benedict Cumberbatch was also nominated for Power of the Dog, scoring a best actor for his role as a menacing cowboy in Campion’s film.

Going up against Kidman in the Best Actress category are Olivia Colman, who won a Globe in 2019 for The Favourite, for her role in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s adaptation of the Elena Ferrante novel The Lost Daughter.

Rounding out the strong category are Kirsten Stewart, who plays Princess Diana in Spencer, Jessica Chastain for televangelist tragedy The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and Lady Gaga in Ridley Scott’s true crime hit, House of Gucci.

Aussie Smit-McPhee will compete against Ben Affleck (The Tender Bar), Jamie Dornan and Ciarin Hands (Belfast), and Troy Kotsur (CODA).

In the supporting actress category, Kirsten Dunst earned a nomination for her role in The Power of the Dog, while Outlander star Caitriona Balfe was nominated for Belfast.

Ruth Negga (Passing), Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), and Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard) round out the category.

Cooper Hoffman, the teenage son of Philip Seymour Hoffman, is up for best actor in a comedy or musical for his debut screen role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s coming-of-age comedy, Licorice Pizza. The musician Alana Haim, who stars alongside Hoffman in the film, is up for Best Actress in the equivalent category.

Succession leads the TV categories, with nominations for best drama series as well as stars Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook. Nods for Jennifer Aniston and Billy Crudup helped Morning Wars to four nominations, a number also achieved by Ted Lasso.

Global sensation Squid Game picked up three nominations while Don’t Look Up, Adam McKay’s apocalypse satire, scored four nominations, for best comedy or musical, McKay’s screenplay and for its stars, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story also took four, as did King Richard, in which Will Smith plays the father of Venus and Serena Williams.

In the Best Director category, Campion and Branagh will go up against Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Lost Daughter), Steven Spielberg (West Side Story) and Dennis Villeneuve (Dune).

The contentious Golden Globes were cancelled last year, after a scathing Los Angeles Times report called into question the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s ethics, financial practices and lack of diversity (the organisation had zero Black members at the time).

Though they will take place on January 9, they will not be televised after US network NBC pulled the plug last year.
