Logie Awards: Nominee Tom Gleeson under fire for mocking television’s top honour

ABC comedian Tom Gleeson raised the hackles of some Aussie television stars with his comments after taking out the industry’s top honour - and his fellow nominees haven’t forgotten. SEE FULL LIST OF NOMINEES

Berts Logies moments

And already the gloves are off – moments after the 2022 Logie Award nominations were announced, barbs were flying between contenders for television’s coveted Gold trophy.

Vying for the top award at television’s night of night’s are Sonia Kruger, Julia Morris, Ray Meagher, Melissa Leong, Hamish Blake, Karl Stefanovic and Tom Gleeson.

“People have on occasion run down the Logies but I love it, I love the industry, it supports so many people with jobs and it has been a tough three years for the industry,” Stefanovic told The Daily Telegraph. “To have this now, the timing is unreal and we are going to blow the roof off it, which will be great.”

Gleeson won the Gold at the 2019 Logies, the last time the event was held as it has been cancelled for two years running due to the pandemic.

He won the award after a campaign mocking the honour, which was widely criticised by his peers.

“I love Tommy but you can’t run down TVs night of nights,” said Stefanovic, who reunited with former Today co-host Lisa Wilkinson at the event. “It is a beautiful night, I won’t have it and if he does it again, there will be serious problems for him.

“This is Queensland, we can lock him up for months and no one would know.”

The nominees were announced at a star-studded breakfast early Sunday morning with the biggest names of the Australian small screen gathering at the Burleigh Pavilion on the Gold Coast.

The 62nd annual Logies will be held at The Star Gold Coast Entertainment Precinct Convention and Exhibition Centre on Sunday, June 19.

“I got a surprise because after my carry-on last time, I thought the Logies could invite me to the Gold Coast to let me know that I am not nominated,” he joked. “They missed an opportunity there.

“I am not going to campaign … I don’t want to annoy anyone this year. I am just going to sit back and watch, let other people have a go and it is an election, no one wants to be told how to vote right now.”

Stefanovic, Meagher and Blake have all won Gold previous years while it is a first time nomination for Kruger, Morris and Leong.
“I have never won a single Logie after 75 years in the business,” Morris laughed, Kruger adding: “I can’t wipe the smile off my face.”

As is the case each year, nominations are separated into peer voted ‘most outstanding’ and public voted ‘most popular’. Voting in the most popular categories started today and runs for five weeks until the end of the red carpet telecast on the night of the awards.

Sophie Monk provided some comedy gold herself at the nomination event as she read out some of the contenders and instead of throwing to a slide of vision, read out the cue card: “TV Gold Logie vision slide”.

Realising her mistake, she was quick to make light of the blonde moment.

“I am like Anchorman,” she laughed.

In his career, Newton won four Gold Logies, was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame, and hosted the event 20 times.

“We are so thrilled Bert is being recognised this way and will be part of the Logies every year moving forward,” wife Patti Newton said. “It was such a big part of his career and he just loved it, so I know he would be pretty pleased with this honour.”
