HBO shows Succession and The White Lotus lead 2023 Emmy nominations

HBO shows are set to dominate at the upcoming Emmy Awards after the full list of 2023 nominees were revealed this morning.

HBO shows are gearing up for glory at the this year’s upcoming Emmy Awards, after the full list of 2023 nominees were announced this morning.

Leading the way with a whopping 27 nominations is the critically acclaimed drama series Succession, which wrapped its final season in May.

The show follows the Roy siblings and their fight to edge out their father for full control of the family’s media empire.

The successful series stars Aussie actress Sarah Snook, who is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Acting nods for Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong, who will go head-to-head in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category.

Two other HBO dramas – which, like Succession, also air locally on BINGE – also topped the nominations list.

Video-game adaptation The Last of Us scored an impressive 24 nominations, including one for Aussie actor Murray Bartlett, who is up for in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

Fellow Aussie Anna Torv is also nominated in the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series category.

Anthology series The White Lotus received 23 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. Four of its actors – F. Murray Abraham, Michael Imperioli, Theo James and Will Sharpe – will battle it out for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Likewise, five of the show’s actresses – Jennifer Coolidge, Meghann Fahy, Sabrina Impacciatore, Aubrey Plaza and Simona Tabasco – have all been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Last year, Coolidge won for her role as the ditzy and wealthy billionaire heiress Tanya McQuoid, taking out the Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie category.

Other fan favourites such as Ted Lasso and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel scored 21 and 14 nominations, respectively.

Previous Netflix juggernaut The Crown failed to score a slew of nominations this year, only receiving two: Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Aussie actress Elizabeth Debicki, who portrays Princess Diana in Season 5.

The Primetime Emmy Awards are currently scheduled to air on September 18. However, it’s expected the show may be potponed due to the ongoing writers’ strike in Hollywood. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which stage the awards, are pushing for a November broadcast, while broadcaster Fox reportedly wants the show to air in January. Despite this, cancellation is not an option and the show much go on as the prestigious ceremony marks its 75th anniversary this year.
