Guitarist and co-founder of Sydney’s psychedelic rock band Deep Sea Arcade Nick Weaver has died at the age of 37.

Weaver had been diagnosed with bowel cancer, his family revealed in a statement to Double J.

“He was in the midst of many projects including recording a new album with The Tambourine Girls, a disco record with Salmon Brothers, as well as a solo record, which his bandmates have pledged to finish and release soon,” his family said.

“His creativity was only just blossoming, and he will be greatly missed.”

Weaver and his friend Nic McKenzie founded the band Deep Sea Arcade when they were teenagers, releasing their first album Outlands in 2012.

The album received critical acclaim for its 60s-inspired sound.

The Music Network reported that concert promoter Michael Chugg described Deep Sea Arcade in 2013 as “one of the best bands in Australia”.

The band had toured with bands such as Modest Mouse, The Charlatans, Kaiser Chiefs and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

The band later released Blacklight in 2018, recording with Grammy-award winning producer Eric J Dubowsky before they disbanded.

In between, Weaver had released two EPs and albums with The Tambourine Girls, who are a four-piece indie pop band led by ex-Deep Sea Arcade guitarist Simon Relf.

Deep Sea Arcade’s Instagram posted a tribute to Nick on Friday morning.

“Endless love to Nick Weaver, his family and those who were close to him. We’re all forever grateful for his incredible talent, humility and quick sense of humour. It was an honour to write, perform, laugh and create these albums together. Miss you Nick.”
