Once, musicals preparing to open in Sydney just had to worry about casting the right stars and selecting costumes and lighting.
But the people behind Pippin, an award-winning Broadway musical making its way here, are also concerned with making sure the COVID safety plan is all ticked off.
Foundation Theatres CEO Graeme Kearns said it was important to restore confidence in the theatre industry and for theatregoers to feel safe when seeing shows again.
He said the production team had developed a COVID safety plan that includes hygiene, cleaning and patron flow measures to ensure the theatre experience is as safe as possible.
“We’re confident that if conditions permit, theatregoers will return and demand for terrific musical theatre will be strong,” he said.
“It’s critical that productions like Pippin pave the way, providing jobs for our talented theatre-makers who have been out of work since March.
“I’m optimistic that the magic that they create and the experience of live theatre will ensure people still buy tickets and come.”
The curtain is set to rise on Pippin in November at the Sydney Lyric Theatre.
Directed by Tony winner Diane Paulus, the hit Broadway production is a coming-of-age story about a young prince searching for meaning in his life, as told by a travelling troupe of acrobats who speak directly to the audience.
The musical features soaring songs from Grammy winner and Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz.
“We’re thrilled to invite audiences back to the theatre to experience this magical show,” producer John Frost said.
“This is the perfect show for these times, to lift people out of their COVID blues.
“Pippin is about a young man who is trying to find light in a dark and difficult world — something we’re all trying to do right now.”
Pippin will reopen at the Sydney Lyric Theatre from November 24. Tickets on sale at pippinthemusical.com.au
