The Baldwin family have paid tribute to cinematographer Halyna Hutchins who was accidentally shot and killed by Alec Baldwin on the set of the Western film, Rust, and to the film’s director Joel Souza who was wounded.
In a post shared with her 38.8 million followers, 24-year-old Alec Baldwin’s niece Hailey Bieber wrote: “Sending all my love to the family of Halyna Hutchins. This is a truly unimaginable and devastating tragedy.”
“My thoughts are also with Joel Souza as he recovers. I am absolutely heartbroken for everyone involved.”
On Thursday night, local time, Bieber’s father, the actor Stephen Baldwin, also posted on Instagram.
“Asking for your prayers tonight friends not much can be said other than please pray for all involved in the wake of this tragic accident thank you.”
Stephen Baldwin, 55, is a devout Christian and in his post cited Psalm 91 which reads in part: “I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”
Celebrity tributes are pouring in on social media for the death of the talented cinematographer whose career was just starting to receive acclaim.
Shannon Lee, tweeting on behalf of his late brother Brandon Bruce Lee, who was killed by a prop gun on the film set of The Crow, posted:
Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and to Joel Souza and all involved in the incident on âRustâ. No one should ever be killed by a gun on a film set. Period. ð

ALEC BALDWIN’S HOLLYWOOD SAGAS
Equally adept at comedy and drama, Alec Baldwin has been one of Hollywood’s most reliable actors for more than 40 years.
The most successful of the clan that also includes younger brothers Billy, Daniel and Stephen, he’s an Oscar-nominee for The Cooler and two-time Emmy winner and three-time Golden Globe winner for his role as suave network executive Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock.
His other movie credits include The Hunt For Red October, The Aviator, and the Mission: Impossible Franchise, and the vocal Democrat was celebrated (and reviled by the man himself) for his hilariously over-the-top impersonation of former US President Donald Trump on US comedy institution Saturday Night Live.
In 2016, he was also the Australian face of finance company Latitude Financial Services in a series of television ads.
But his celebrated acting career hasn’t always been smooth, having also developed something of a reputation for volatility.
He was acquitted of misdemeanour battery in 1995 after a photographer videoed his then wife Kim Basinger and their new baby and was kicked off a plane 10 years ago when he refused to turn off his electronic device.
His divorce from Basinger also turned ugly, culminating in an angry voicemail of him complaining about his children that was leaked and left the actor feeling suicidal and betrayed.
PEOPLE KILLED ON MOVIE SETS
Between the high-risk stunts, heavy machinery and weapons, making movies and television can be a dangerous business.
Despite safety protocols, which have tightened in recent years, stunt artist injuries still happen and, tragically, some actors have even lost their lives in the pursuit of their craft.
Brandon Lee – The Crow
Brandon Lee, the son of martial arts great Bruce Lee, was killed in 1993 on the set of The Crow. The rising star was filming a death scene for the action film about a rock star who returns from the dead to take revenge on his killers when he was hit by .44 calibre slug. The gun should have fired a blank but an autopsy found that a bullet had lodged near his spine.
Vic Morrow – The Twilight Zone
Veteran actor Vic Morrow was filming a segment, set in Vietnam and directed by John Landis, of the 1982 movie The Twilight Zone, when he and seven-year-old Myca Dinh Le and six-year-old Renee Shin-Yi Chen were killed. A pyrotechnic accident on the Californian set caused a helicopter to crash on top of them. The tragedy led to a protracted lawsuit and major changes to film safety codes.
Johann Ofner – Bliss N Eso video
Gold Coast actor Johann Ofner was killed in 2017 after being shot in the chest, in a bar in the CBD of Brisbane where Aussie hip-hop act Bliss N Eso were filming a video for their song Friend Like You. Wadding from a blank round in a sawn-off shot gun that was supposed to be fired in the air fatally wounded him, leading to an inquest.
Jon Erik-Hexum – Cover Up
American actor Jon Erik-Hexum was filming the action-adventure TV series Cover Up, when he was playing around with a gun and simulating Russian roulette during a break in filming. Although the gun contained a blank when he held it to his temple and pulled the trigger, the blunt force trauma of the wadding was enough to shatter a piece of his skull. He died six days later.
Ken Steadman – Sliders
US actor Ken Steadman was killed in a dune-buggy accident while filming an episode of the sci-fi fantasy series Sliders in 1996 in California. He was moving the vehicle to the next location – without a seatbelt – when it overturned on a dry lake bed. He was flown to a hospital in Santa Barbara, but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
