Australian actor Joel Edgerton has revealed what it was like meeting Hollywood legend Harrison Ford.

They say you should never meet your heroes, but Aussie actor Joel Edgerton’s icon exceeded his expectations.

While Edgerton has long admired Harrison Ford, he hadn’t expected the Star Wars and Indiana Jones star’s comedic side while directing him in a new advertising campaign.

“There was part of his personality that really shone through,” Edgerton told The Daily Telegraph.

“It suddenly made sense why I liked watching him on the screen … He was very likeable and an intelligent person.

“I was a bit nervous about working with him. There is that risk that you’re going to be disappointed by your hero, which was totally not true.

“He’s funnier than you would expect. I had this perception that he was a bit gruff and, when I finally met him, I wanted to include how childish and fun he could be.”

The project was even more special for Edgerton because he got to work with his partner, Christina Centenera, who was a stylist on set.

“We just had a fun time, I never imagined Christine and I would work together,” he said. “She definitely gives me fashion advice.”

Since becoming a father to twins in 2021, the 50-year-old has embraced taking more time for his directorial work, particularly enjoying the creative freedom of projects like the Glenmorangie whiskey campaign filmed in Scotland.

“It was just so much fun,” Edgerton said.

“I’ve directed things, but nothing that had a bit of humour to it.

“I usually tend to have more sense of humour in real life than on screen. I don’t know how funny I am.”

Back in Sydney after the premiere of his latest film, Train Dreams, Edgerton is gearing up for a busy year in which he will head to Chicago for a second season of Dark Matter.
