TV star Melissa Doyle’s vital lesson for Year 12s ahead of final exams

Melissa Doyle has delivered a moving message for Year 12s facing their final exams with an open letter to her son Nick urging him to “savour the fun times, your mates, the experiences”.

Do our schools need NAPLAN?

Melissa Doyle may be a TV presenter, radio host and author but above all she’s a mother of two — and her eldest child, Nick, will sit his HSC this year. Now, she has penned an emotional letter to Nick which will resonate with other Year 12 students around the country as they prepare for their final exams. Her message to the class of 2019? Work hard, yes. But have fun, and above all else — enjoy the ride.

Dear Nick,

OK mate — enough is enough. Close the books. Shut down the computer and head outside. I want you to play golf this weekend and go out with your mates on Saturday night.

You’ve been at school for 12 and a half years. You’ve learnt to read and write and play the drums. You’ve studied physics and Shakespeare and volcanoes. You’ve learnt social skills, schoolyard politics, time management and how to run for the train carrying three bags while stuffing cold vegemite toast in your mouth.

Now we’re at the pointy end and the HSC is just around the corner.

Remember, it’s not the end of something, it’s the start. Your next chapter is about to begin. But before that glorious day when you can dump your study notes in the recycling bin, you’ll have a few more late nights, a bit of extra stress and some pretty intense exams.

But you know what? Whatever will be, will be.

I know you want to go to uni and I want you to get the marks you need to get into the course you have your heart set on … but if you don’t, then it’s not the end of the world.

You’ll work out how to get where you want to go and do what you want to do. It may be via the winding road rather than the direct path, but that won’t matter.

I want you to enjoy these last days of school. Someone will inevitably take a big group photo of you and your mates, arms slung around each other’s shoulders and grinning ear to ear. You’ll treasure that when you’re my age and all looking a little older. But you will also remember how you felt at that moment … excited, nervous, happy and sad all at the same time.

So yes, work hard because I want you to achieve your dreams and find the career you love. But also savour the fun times, your mates, the experiences and the formals.

Appreciate the friendships you’ve made, the teachers who have impacted you, the moments you thought were tough and the times you doubted you would get through, but you did.

Remember the nerves you felt then and how good you felt when you got past them.

Good luck buddy … to you, your mates, and every other student facing these final school exams. Just do your best — it’s all you can do.

Love Mum x
