The schools with St George and the Sutherland Shire’s most crowded and best resourced classrooms have been revealed.
An analysis of national data from the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority has revealed the schools where teachers have the most students to teach.
The figures show in 2018 in the St George and Sutherland Shire region there were more students per teacher at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School than any other school.
According to the data, the most up to data that includes all state and private schools nationally, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School had 22.5 students for every teacher, the highest in the area.
The second highest student-teacher ratios were at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School where there was an average of 21.4 students for every teacher at the school.
At St Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School there were 21.4 students for every teacher, the St George and Sutherland Shire region’s third highest.
A Catholic Schools NSW spokesman said student-teacher ratios were declining across their sector.
“Student-teacher ratios are affected by a range of factors specific to an individual school’s context, such as teacher experience, the number of non-teaching staff, school size, and the level of socio-educational advantage of the students,” the spokesman said.
“NSW Catholic Schools continue to offer a terrific education, with high-quality teachers and academic results well-above the state average.”
All of the schools with the highest teacher to student ratio were special education settings, primarily for children with additional intellectual or behavioural needs.
There was one teacher for every 3.5 students at Aspect South East Sydney School, the region’s lowest ratio of students per teacher.
The second lowest ratio was at Cook School where there were 3.6 students per teacher.
The figures show at Minerva School there were 3.6 students per teacher, the third lowest ratio in the St George region.
According to ACARA the national student-teacher ratio was 13.5 students for every teacher.
Across the country independent private schools had the lowest student to teacher ratios with 11.7 students to every teacher.
Government schools had an average of 13.8 students for every teacher while Catholic schools had an average of 14 students for every teacher.
Student-teacher ratios do not take into account teacher aides or non-teaching staff at schools, only the full-time equivalent teachers.
