Hunter schools boom: Which are boasting big enrolment numbers

An analysis of federal government data has revealed the Hunter region schools where student numbers have risen the most in the past five years.

The Hunter schools that are booming have been revealed.

An analysis of federal government data has revealed the Hunter region schools where student numbers have risen the most in the past five years.

Between 2013 and 2018, enrolment at Alesco Senior College, which has multiple campuses, has increased by 343.1 per cent, faster than any other school in the region.

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority figures are the most up to date enrolment numbers that include all state and private schools nationally.

According to the latest public data that includes public and private schools, student numbers have grown from 65 to 288, the fastest growth in the region.

Atwear College and Alesco Senior College’s executive direcor Rowan Cox said they were establishing new Alesco campuses in areas of need.

“Particularly those that have limited options available to young people outside of a mainstream schooling environment,” she said.

“Some of the growth in the campuses have been in Cessnock, Raymond Terrace, Tomaree and Forster/Tuncurry as well as our largest campus at Newcastle and Cooks Hill.

“Each of the campuses are quite small and have about 60 young people and it’s targeting young people who would not have success in a mainstream school environment.

“These cohorts of young people have always existed, we are just now engaging them in their community and with their community and we’re seeing a much greater success rate.”

The second fastest growing school was Fern Bay Public School, where the student body increased by 135.5 between 2013 and 2018.

Enrolment numbers grew from 31 in 2013 to 73 in 2018.

Over those five years Bobin Public School had the third biggest enrolment boom in the area, 10 more students at the school in 2018 than in 2013, a 125.0 per cent increase.

Nords Wharf Public School: 88.5 per cent change

Booral Public School: 81.4 per cent change

Islington Public School: 76.7 per cent change
