HSC 2019: How Illawarra schools performed

Strong performances in the 2019 HSC have seen a number of schools in the Illawarra jump up the state rankings, with one school rocketing into the top 50. See how your school performed.

As students across NSW receive their HSC results, schools have also been eagerly examining their performance, with one school in the Illawarra making into the 50 top-ranked schools in the state for 2019.

Smith’s Hill High School outperformed other schools in the Illawarra, coming out on top in a comparison of 2019 HSC results from the region.

Rankings are based on the proportion of all rounders and highest achieving students in the HSC.

The selective school has climbed in the rankings, with data from the NSW Board of Studies revealing it jumped from 49 in the state last year to 39 this year.

With 120 students sitting the HSC, the school managed to pull in 212 high scores, with seven students making it onto the all-rounders list.

Of the top 50 schools across the state this year, 19 were government selective schools, and the rest were independent. The top 50 list was made up of 23 all girls’ schools, 18 co-ed schools, and nine boys’ schools.

Success stories in the Illawarra also include Shellharbour Anglican College, whose strong performance saw the school climb the rankings from 273 in 2018 to 153 in 2019.

The Illawarra Christian School and Holy Spirit College also greatly improved in the rankings this year. The Illawarra Christian School jumped up from 300 in 2018 to 186 in 2019, while Holy Spirit 383 to 193 in the rankings.

St Mary Star of the Sea College in Wollongong had 54 high scores this year, but dropped in the rankings from 157 last year to 247 in 2019.

The prestigious Illawarra Grammar School ranked at 295 in the state this year, slipping from 149 in 2018.
