Australia’s Top 100 Private Schools: Queensland’s best schools ranked

The top private schools of Australia have been ranked today and 20 Queensland colleges made the cut. See the full list and which ones made it into the national top 10.

An all-girls institution has topped the list for Queensland in News Corp’s list of Australia’s Top 100 Private Schools with the principal labelling it an “incredible honour” for female education.

Brisbane Girls Grammar School (BGGS) has ranked number one among Queensland’s private schools.

Principal Jacinda Euler Welsh said the “obvious thing to feel” was a sense of pride.

“It’s wonderful that 150 years after this school was established to provide education for girls that was equal to what their brothers might receive – it’s a wonderful honour to have received this,” Ms Euler Welsh said.

Ms Euler Welsh said at the centre of everything BGGS did was about teaching, learning and the experience of the student in the classroom.

“So first and foremost, you need to have teachers who are highly educated, professional, but also passionate about their subjects, so students learn best when they’re taught by someone who absolutely loves their subject,” she said.

“I think the wonderful thing about the school is the range, and that comes partly from our size. That means we can offer over 40 different subjects, we can offer five different languages. It means that girls can find what it is that they love, and they’ve got so much choice.”

Ms Euler Welsh said the diverse range of options at Brisbane Girls Grammar was an “incredibly exciting thing”.

“The other bit, I think that’s probably one of the signature strengths in the school, is just that spirit and energy that comes from having a whole lot of girls who, in the main, are incredibly excited about learning,” she said.

“There’s a great sense of excitement that the girls generate among themselves.”

Also making the top 100 were schools including Brisbane Boys’ College, Somerville House, St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School, Anglican Church Grammar School, Redeemer Lutheran College, Stuartholme School, Townsville Grammar School and St Peters Lutheran College.

BGGS year 8 student Arabella Rafiee said the school offered her a welcoming and inspiring place to learn and grow.

“The teachers are dedicated and supportive, and the strong sense of community makes every day enjoyable and meaningful,” she said.

Olivia Chen, also in Year 8, said she valued the care for students.

“What I enjoy the most about Brisbane Girls Grammar School would have to be the sisterhood we all share,” she said. “When you join BGGS you automatically become part of the community, one where everyone lifts each other up and supports one another.”

Her year 8 classmate Cleo Leck said teachers were “encouraging, experienced and helpful, which makes a big difference in how much I enjoy learning”.

“I also appreciate the opportunities we get to explore through clubs, sports, events and special programs,” she said.

The exclusive list has been made by crunching numbers on a wide range of metrics including academic success, school facilities, subjects, extra-curricular activities and teacher-student ratios.
