NAPLAN results indicate 'we're either going backwards or they've flatlined'

Ten of the state’s top selective schools and one private school have been given a so called perfect score of 100 in an independent analysis of the state’s school results.

The analysis of academic results conducted by the Better Education Group marked schools out of 100 and then ranked them on performance, with the selective powerhouse James Ruse Agricultural College coming in first followed by the also selective schools of North Sydney Boys and North Sydney Girls.

That was followed by a litany of other selective schools including Sydney Girls, Baulkham Hills High, Sydney Boys and Hornsby Girls. Sydney Grammar was the top ranked private school on the list, however applicants must sit a test prior to admission.

The Better Education website is run independently and describes its aim as providing “informative and comparative school results, including school rankings or ratings and lists of best performing schools, to parents wanting to make choices about schooling for their children”.

It is not known precisely how the scores are tabulated but its website says the ranking of schools is based on a statistical approach using median scores.

It states “a school’s English and Maths test results are rated with five grades nationally while the State Overall score is based on the weighted average of all the subject scores in a state.”

When it came to primary schools it was the private schools who dominated, taking out the three top spots.

Sydney Grammar was ranked number one, followed by St Aloysius’ College, Milsons Point and the prestigious Abbotsleigh on the Upper North Shore.

Private schools took out the top three spots in the rankings when it came to primary schools.
Private schools took out the top three spots in the rankings when it came to primary schools.

They were followed by Matthew Pearce Public in Baulkham Hills, Artarmon Public School and John Colet Public School in Belrose.

While private schools dominated both the secondary and primary school list, schools with a broad mix of socioeconomic students also performed well.

That includes Al Zahra College in Arncliffe, Moorebank High School and Sefton High.

The rankings only include schools which were given a score of 60 or higher for the group.
