HSC study bubbles introduced to help students get ready for exams

Teens studying for their HSC can now meet up with more friends as part of Year 12 “study bubbles” — but there are conditions. Find out more.

HSC exams to begin on November 9

HSC students will be able to meet up with more friends this week with the announcement of Year 12 “study bubbles”.

Similar to the three person friends bubble for under 18s, the study bubble will allow groups of five HSC students to meet together at school, however unlike the friends bubble the students can be over 18.

Students won’t be able to float between or switch study bubbles, so the groups of five must only meet up with each other.

Every student in a lockdown area, including LGAs of concern, can be in a study bubble from Tuesday.

Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said the study bubble will add to the individual and small group support currently available to HSC students.

“This HSC cohort have had such a challenging time with Covid, we hope this bubble will help ease some of their anxieties ahead of their exams,” Ms Mitchell said.

“This news is particularly great because the new settings will be the same across Greater Sydney, meaning all HSC students will benefit.”

Until schools start reopening on October 18, HSC students can access the school grounds for up to three hours per day for their study bubbles.

The bubbles must meet either outdoors or an indoor room with lots of ventilation like a library or hall.

The bubbles can include any student doing HSC exams, including those in Year 11 who are sitting early exams.

It comes after the NSW return to schools was brought forward by a week as vaccination rates continue to climb.

Year 12 students will be part of the first cohort to return, alongside kindergarten and Year 1.

HSC exams will kick off November 9, with hopes opening up study bubbles will help bolster student motivation after months at home.

Unlike the friends bubble, the study bubble of five can only meet at school, and students can pick different people for their friend and study bubbles.
