HSC results released early in NSW Education Standards blunder

Thousands of HSC students were given a sneak peek into how they performed after a major mistake saw their results released on an education website early.

Student shocked about how confusing HSC maths questions are

Thousands of HSC students have been given a sneak peek into their results after merit lists were mistakenly published on the NSW Education Standards website days before official results were due to be released

The embarrassing bureaucratic blunder comes after one of the most disruptive years of the HSC whereby exams were postponed for weeks meaning students did not receive their results for about a month afterwards.

The results were due to be released on Thursday but students have discovered that the names of thousands of students who received a mark of 90 per cent or above had been published on Monday night.

That included the student’s name, his or her school and which subject or subjects in which they had scored well in.

On social media, elated students were quick to alert their friends while some felt like they had been forgotten.

“Spy with my little eye your name,” one student wrote.

“Don’t see our names there,” another student said.

The lists were live on Monday afternoon but sometime after 6pm they were taken down.

They had been replaced by an error message accompanied by a photograph of empty exam chairs.

It is not the first time that the Authority has been engulfed in scandal — in 2019 they printed the wrong date on thousands of students’ physical certificates which then had to be reprinted.

A NESA spokeswoman said the merit lists were uploaded in “error”.

“NESA confirms that a preliminary 2021 HSC Distinguished Achievers list was uploaded in error earlier [Monday] afternoon,” she said.

“NESA apologises for any inconvenience this has caused.

“The 2021 HSC First in Course list will be published on the NESA website from midday on Wednesday, January 19, followed by the Distinguished Achievers, All Rounders and Top Achievers at midday on Thursday, January 20 .”
