A western Sydney school has closed after a number of staff were forced into isolation as the city grapples with its latest outbreak of locally acquired Covid-19 cases.

It comes as NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced one new Covid case acquired from the Myer Bondi Junction store.

On Thursday evening, the school wrote on Facebook: “As a number of our staff have visited these locations recently, they have been asked to follow the advice from NSW Health and as such our school will be non-operational tomorrow.

“We would like to confirm that the school has no confirmed cases of Covid-19 and there is no action that any of our families need to do in relation to this.”

On Friday morning, NSW Health added a Newtown chocolate shop, a cafe in Redfern, a grocer in North Sydney and an eatery in Campbelltown to its list of exposure sites across Sydney.
On Friday afternoon, it also added more locations at Bondi Junction Westfield and Bondi Junction interchange, Sydney International Airport arrival circuit and a location in Macquarie Park.

NSW Health is currently contacting people who were potentially exposed, who must get tested and isolate until further notice.

Sydney remains on high alert with one new Covid case announced on Friday morning.

The Premier also confirmed masks will now be compulsory on public transport for Greater Sydney, not including Wollongong, Central Coast and the Blue Mountains.

The restriction will begin from 4pm on Friday for five days.

The Premier has also recommended people wear masks in indoor venues in Greater Sydney, especially in the eastern suburbs however this is not compulsory.

The first man to test positive was a driver who has transported international airline crews but did not travel overseas himself.

He undertook a saliva test on Tuesday and was confirmed as a positive case on Wednesday. The source of the infection has not been confirmed and authorities are urging people to come forward for testing.

Two other cases were announced on Thursday including a 70-year-old woman — who also visited the Belle Cafe in Vaucluse and a man — aged in his 40s — from Baulkham Hills.

The outbreak follows confirmation from health authorities earlier in the week that they are investigating the possibility of the virus spreading between returned travellers inside a hotel quarantine facility.

A couple and another returned traveller who were staying on level four of the Radisson Blu hotel were revealed to have the same strain of the virus through genomic sequencing.

All three people had the UK variant of the virus. There is no suggestion the three cases are linked to the new Bondi cases.

NSW Health has contacted more than 700 people who are getting tested and self-isolating in relation to the venues of concern.

Household members of the contacts are also asked to self-isolate until the contact receives a negative result.
