Sydney’s New Year’s Eve family fireworks has reportedly been snubbed out for the second year running.
The City of Sydney has decided to scrap the 9pm fireworks amid safety concerns but go ahead with the midnight spectacular.
The decision, made in August and ticked off by Premier Gladys Berejiklian, was made to limit crowding in the city on December 31.
The council was concerned with getting people in and out of the city in addition to crowds gathering for the midnight main event.
The 2021 Sydney New Year’s Eve event will be managed by the City, and given the continuing health concerns related to the pandemic, will be required to meet the current Public Health Order at that time,” City of Sydney Mayor Clover-Moore said.
“For an event the scale of Sydney New Year’s Eve, contracts are signed and money spent months in advance. The difficult decision had to be made to follow the State Government’s 2020 event for a limited, Covid-safe New Year’s Eve.
“As in 2020, to ensure the safety of residents, businesses, visitors and staff, unfortunately the 9pm fireworks will not go ahead.
“The fireworks always generate very large crowds and the two separate displays result in the cross over of large numbers of people leaving for one show and arriving for the next.”
