First it was Dan Andrews and now our own Gladys Berejiklian has become the latest victim in the world of social media mashups, proving that the true Australian larrikin spirit has not died from Covid.
Tuning in to the Covid conference every morning at 11:00am and bracing ourselves for bad news has given digital genii the idea to produce an impressively edited masterpiece that narrates a fictitious version of what the Premier has said about the statewide lockdown.
The video, which goes for 1 minutes and 44 seconds, pulls together some of the best and worst moments of the daily press conference households have seen since the beginning of the pandemic in an attempt to lighten our spirits with a bit of dark humour.
Featuring the Premier herself with dark ambient music in the background, the clip likens current Covid restrictions to conditions experienced during the Fourth Reich – the period following Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich that attempted to revive Nazi Germany ideologies.
“I hope everybody likes staying at home because we are going to go into lockdown forever. Nobody from NSW is going anywhere” Premier Gladys Berejiklian appears to say, following her initial distaste at being criticised.
“I hope this really will be devastating. We don’t like to be heavy-handed, but what we need to say today now is that if you leave home, we will give you a death sentence.”
Despite the stark differences in these historical events, the clip is designed to be a joke about the current Covid situation that is gripping the state and has launched the people of NSW into lockdown until at least the end of the month.
During the 112-day lockdown in Victoria last year, well-known Australian electronic duo Mashd N Kutcher released a mash-up titled ‘Get on The Beers’ featuring clips of Victorian Premier Dan Andrews at the daily press conferences.
The song took out number 12 on the Triple J hottest 100 countdown this year, giving some hope to Gladys Berejiklian’s moment of fame.
