NSW suburbs still reporting high Covid case numbers ahead of restrictions easing

Some NSW suburbs are still reporting up to 52 Covid cases a day, with one region at 581 in 28 days. Here are the highest vax rates and cases per suburb.

With NSW set to open when the state hits the 70 per cent mark for double vaccinations, some suburbs and towns are still recording more than 20 cases per day.

Sydney recorded its first day of case numbers above 20 on June 26, and by the end of September, while case numbers were slowing, some local government areas were still recording a high number of cases.

The LGAs of Blacktown, Canterbury, Bankstown and Cumberland were top of the list, and Cumberland Mayor Steve Christou said he was pleased with the region’s slowing numbers.

He said the lockdown had been difficult for residents, and the NSW Government has a long way to go in “regaining the trust” of residents after extending the initial three-week lockdown amid scenes on the news of “people laying on beaches maskless” in the Eastern Suburbs.

He said he has had “fruitful discussion” with new Premier Dominic Perrottet about the area possibly opening up early with the rest of Sydney.

“I’m a straight shooter, so I tell it like it is. It would be great to open early,” he said.

“This is a time for a reset by the new government after trust was eroded. There’s signs of a fresh approach.

“We don’t want to be discriminated against and we should all open up at the same time.”

He said the lockdown had been difficult for many residents.

“The most difficult thing is it’s lasted three months and most people would’ve only had two weeks’ savings,” he said.

“Now people can’t pay their rent, their bills or put food on the table.”

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said the region was ready to open up as soon as they receive word from the government.

He said the region had been “stigmatised” by the government, and called for the permit system to go.

“Our vaccination rates are so good we should be given freedoms as early as possible, depending on the health advice,” he said.

“I’d love to see us open back up on Friday before the weekend.

“We’ve copped it harder than most, and the rules should be equal.

“I think our vaccination rates prove we are ready.”

Here’s a list of the LGAs still doing it tough during the Delta outbreak.
