The Northern Territory records 95 new COVID-19 cases

The Northern Territory has reached a “concerning” milestone as it recorded 95 new Covid-19 cases.

The Territory’s Health Minister Natasha Fyles said the case total was “concerning” on Sunday and urged people to take precautions to help battle rising numbers of cases.

Of those cases 14 are classed as community transmission while another 28 remain under investigation, she said.

“We have certainly had a significant number of cases in the Territory today,” Ms Fyles said during the press conference.

She urged people to wear their masks, ensure their vaccination was up-to-date and get booster shots if eligible.

However she did not rule out further restrictions if case numbers continued to climb.

“There has been a number of briefings held this morning with our health officials and our Chief Health Officer is comfortable with the mask mandate that’s in place,” Ms Fyles said.

“But we’re not ruling out into the future that we wouldn’t put in place further public health measures to keep the community safe.”

Many of the cases would have been acquired before the New Year’s Eve mandate came into place, she said.

Three cases were recorded at Jabiru, a small town in the Kakadu National Park, while 10 were recorded at Nhulunbuy in East Arnhem Land and one case was found in Katherine.

But the majority of the new cases, around 80, have been recorded in the Greater Darwin area, Ms Fyles said.

There are currently 26 people in hospital with Covid-19 but only three are classified as acute hospital admissions.

The Territory’s previous daily record case total was 60 cases on Friday.

More to come.
