Gosford cake maker left confused after ‘vague advice’ from NSW Health

The owner of a cake shop in Gosford which has been exposed to Covid-19 says the advice she was given by NSW Health was “vague” and confusing.

A Central Coast business owner was left with unanswered questions and vague instructions yesterday afternoon when she was notified that her cake store was a “possible” exposure site.

It wasn’t until late on Sunday that Cakes By Kyla was officially listed as an Covid-19 exposure site on the NSW Health website.

Kyla Daniels, co-owner, of Cakes By Kyla with her husband Shaun in Gosford received a call on Sunday, notifying her that her cake shop was “potentially a close contact.”

”The call basically said that we were potentially a close contact because we had somebody who possibly has Covid and possibly was infectious at the time, in our shop on Wednesday morning,” Mrs Daniels told The Daily Telegraph.

“It was all just ‘possibly, possibly, possibly’ and the vagueness of the information was quite concerning, I know nothing.”

“We’re closed on Sunday and Monday but I got the call just before lunchtime this morning but I was just about to take my son out for some exercises and head to the shops so it was lucky we got the call when we did.”

Last week Cakes By Kyla were seen delivering cakes to staff at Gosford Hospital and also the local testing clinic.

“As well as delivering cakes to frontline workers, this year we have been working with a local charity Shoebox Revolution to provide care packages for the homeless and people in need,” she said.

“We provide the cereals, milks and pastas to help get them through.”

“We’ve also been doing contactless home deliveries when we finish work for those without cars and can’t catch public transport.”

The popular cake maker said she was struggling to get “any solid answers” from the caller, a Newcastle doctor who Mrs Daniels understood to be working alongside Central Coast Health “didn’t seem to have a good grasp of the situation.”

“She called me back with some more information but it was very vague and nothing really made sense,” Mrs Daniels said.

“I thought being a close contact that I would then have to instruct all my staff to go get tested and isolate and notify anyone we’d been in contact with”

“We’ve been keeping our contact really minimal but I have been to the chemist, shops and petrol station so I thought all of these people that I’ve possibly been in contact with should know.”

“But she said, oh no it’s fine, your kids don’t need to get tested, your staff don’t need to get tested which I thought was really strange.”

Mrs Daniels said she later called the National Covid-19 Hotline and “they were really helpful but didn’t have us down as a potential site.”

“They weren’t able to give me any information about whether I need to get my shop deep cleaned and what I should do as far as my staff.”

“So we’ve just done all the precautions straight up, we’ve all gone and got tested and are isolating. All my staff have been tested, except one that’s going in the morning.”

“We get hundreds of people through our store so I’m concerned about the lack of information and how long it’s taking.”

Mrs Daniels and her husband woke to good news this morning that both of them tested negative to Covid-19.

Her post read that “while that’s a positive start, there is still a lot of work to do”, saying she was “well aware” of the cyber abuse taking place following the announcement, but thanking customers and the community for their support.

The Cakes By Kyla Facebook page has been flooded with positivity, with one user responding “all the coast is behind you”.

Anyone who attended Cakes By Kyla on Wednesday 4 August between 10:25am and 10:30am must get tested immediately and isolate.
