Omicron warning after five Covid cases from Flow Fridays boat party

There are fears NSW has its first Omicron superspreader event after a wild Harbour party as the state recorded a spike in Covid cases.

Images have emerged of a crowded, sweaty boat party which could become NSW’s first Omicron superspreader event as health officials urgently test five cases for the variant.

Two of five people who tested positive to Covid after attending the “Sydney’s ultimate RnB and Commercial Boat Party” on December 3 are “likely to have” Omicron, according to NSW Health.

Officials issued a warning for all 140 attendees of dual events Flow Fridays – 90s Themed Boat Party and Freaky Sunday Afrovibe: The Last Dance held on Sydney Harbour.

Five Covid cases have been identified.

The party cruise left King St Wharf 9 at 7.30pm and returned about 11pm on Friday.

“Genome sequencing to confirm if any of the five confirmed cases have the Omicron variant is underway – preliminary results indicate two are likely to have it,” the NSW Health warning reads.

“All cases are isolating at home.

“NSW Health is urgently contacting around 140 people who signed in with a QR code before boarding the boat and directing them and members of their households to immediately get tested, isolate and await further public advice.”

It comes as NSW recorded a spike in Covid cases with 403 new infections reported on Wednesday. Another person has died from the disease.

Video of the night out emerged on Instagram, with dozens of partygoers dancing up a storm on camera.

Attendees are seen swaying to the beat of the music, some with drinks in hand, oblivious to the infection circulating on board.

The crowded dance floor made social distancing difficult, with many punters seen jostling with others or leaning in close to chat with friends and laugh as they danced.

Party cruise organisers urging attendees to get tested.

A screenshot of a NSW Health alert was posted by the Afrovibe organisers on Tuesday evening, urging all attendees to go and get a Covid test.

“There was a Covid outbreak on our boat party 3rd December please make sure you go and get tested,” organisers wrote on Instagram.

The 140 people on the boat were treated to a three-level boat with a different musical stage on each level, confetti cannons, CO2 cannons, 90s dress up theme and “three hours of party vibes”.

“We’re going back to the 90s for this Flow Fridays Boat Party. 90s decor but all current hits,” the description to the Flow event read.

“Sydney’s ultimate RnB and Commercial Boat Party.”

Information for the event, where tickets cost between $22 and $34, said: “Flow Presents and Cadman Cruises are Covid-Safe Businesses and comply with all current regulations of Covid-19.”
