COVID-19: why Australia's 'cold chain' will be critical to a vaccine roll out

The US Food and Drug Administration could approve the Moderna vaccine by Friday according to reports, making a second immunisation available by the beginning of next week.

On Tuesday the FDA issued a positive statement in which it confirmed Moderna's assessment of the efficacy of the drug. Media reports suggest it could grant approval by Friday this week with first doses to be given on Monday.

It comes as the editors of two prestigious British medical journals launched a coordinated attack on government plans to relax measures over Christmas, calling it a "major error" that could cost many lives.

London and surrounding areas Essex and parts of Herefordshire have been recently placed under Tier 3 restrictions after a surge in cases across the UK's south-east.
