VICTORIA RECORDS MORE DEATHS

Victoria has recorded 471 cases of coronavirus and eight more deaths overnight.

Two men in their 60s, three men and two women in their 80s, and one woman in her 90s are among the fatalities.

Premier Daniel Andrews announced 107 more mystery cases had emerged, while 1533 active cases were connected to the state’s plagued aged-care facilities.

Victoria’s deadly total of 725 infections on Wednesday included 15 deaths, with coronavirus claiming the state’s youngest victim, a 33-year-old man.

HOTEL QUARANTINE FOR VICTORIANS IN NSW

Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Wednesday reversed her previously adamant position that people returning from Victoria undertaking self-isolation did not pose a coronavirus risk, announcing the NSW government would be charging travellers to stay in a hotel.

From 12.01am on Friday, Sydney airport will be the only entry point to NSW, except for residents of border communities.

The decision to force returning travellers into 14 days of hotel quarantine was made during a “long meeting” on Wednesday as NSW officials learned of the “extremely disturbing” case numbers coming out of Victoria.

It came less than 24 hours after Health Minister Brad Hazzard declared the existing screening and self-isolation program for returning visitors was sufficient.

Ms Berejiklian defended the policy U-turn by saying “the health advice is always evolving”.

“If there are new circumstances that are presented to us, we will do what it takes to keep NSW safe,” she said.

GATHERINGS ON HOLD AS PERMITS SOAR

New data obtained by The Daily Telegraph shows more than 100,000 permits to enter NSW from Victoria have been issued to non-border town residents since July 22, with many in categories that will be required to enter supervised quarantine from Saturday.

It came as Queensland on Wednesday announced travellers from NSW and the ACT would be barred from this weekend amid fears the virus has escaped Greater Sydney, despite most regional areas experiencing no community transmission.

NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant has urged residents in Sydney hot spots to put off social gatherings in the coming weeks to avoid spreading COVID-19.

Of the 206,618 permits issued by Service NSW since the tougher border restrictions were introduced three weeks ago at least 6749 Victorians have travelled through the state by rail, road and air.

About 833 students and staff have returned from boarding school, 1070 have travelled for medical care, 79 people have come into NSW on “compassionate” grounds and 3134 crossed for child sharing reasons.

At least 48,673 permits have been given to border town residents living on the NSW side in places like Albury and Moama, and 40,285 to residents on the Victorian side such as Wodonga and Echuca.
