A Covid-positive man labelled “public health enemy No.1” by police has allegedly reneged on a deal to hand himself in.
Anthony Karam was notified on August 14 that he was carrying the infectious deadly disease and he had to go into quarantine.
After repeated attempts to contact him failed, NSW Health contacted police who went to the address given by Karam but it turned out to be fake, according to police.
“The chief health officer made a statement under Section 12A of the Public Health Act warning the public about Anthony Karam,’’ a police spokeswoman said.
“NSW Police Force subsequently issued a warrant for Anthony’s arrest for failing to comply with the Public Health Order.”
Police have said they did make contact with a third party and negotiated for Mr Karam to hand himself in.
“But he reneged and failed to comply with the arrangements he had made,’’ the spokeswoman alleged, adding he was now considered “public health enemy No.1”.
Mr Karam was already known to police and they are now appealing to his friends or family to help them locate him.
“He is not only a danger to the community but to himself as he is sick and can be seen coughing when he was last seen in an apartment block,’’ the spokeswoman said.
It is the first time NSW Health has issued an order under Section 62 of the Public Health Act which allows them to name a person and their medical condition.
Karam is described as being of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern appearance, with an olive complexion, about 170cm tall and of a thin build. He has short dark hair, brown eyes, a beard and moustache.
He is known to frequent the areas of Greenacre, Wentworth Point and Parramatta.
