Young people on TikTok are quitting their toxic job with no notice

Young people on TikTok are sharing their experiences of finally quitting toxic workplaces in the most dramatic fashion.

One of life’s rites of passage is the hell of dealing with a toxic workplace — particularly when you’re first joining the workforce and people seem to think they can treat you however they want.

Sure, these experiences make for pretty amazing stories to tell at dinner parties, but imagine if we just said “no”.

That’s exactly what millions of people are doing, and then sharing their experiences of quitting their toxic jobs on TikTok and Instagram.

Look, cue the old people jumping in and complaining about younger generations having no work ethic. However, I think we can all agree there’s a difference between ‘no work ethic’ and ‘enough self respect to walk away from toxic management’.

Some are particularly wild — like this one where she literally walks off the job mid-shift:

@olivetrizzle just walked out my job lol wbu?? no but fr i was miserable and FED UP. #job#quit#foryou#lol#fyp#oops#work♬ original sound - kyn

Admittedly that’s probably not the best idea (unless it’s so bad that you feel unsafe), but I bet it felt really good.

I would have loved to have walked out on that narcissistic small-time retail boss who made people cry on a regular basis, or the cafe owners who collected our tips “for the Christmas work party” that never happened. Most of the time, taking the high road and giving your two weeks notice is a better option for you, though.

I’ve also been the other lowly staff member left to cover the whole floor because a co-worker marched out mid-shift (like the video above) and honestly, it sucked that I was the one who had to deal with it, not the toxic management.

@itsmarisajo It’s like an elephant took its foot off my chest, but I’m also sad. Onward & upward 🤍 #quittingcorporate#quittingmyjob#HelloWinter#9to5problems♬ Dog Days Are Over - Florence & The Machine

In general though, it’s not quite that dramatic. It’s people putting in their notice for a job that they hate, and looking visibly lighter the second the hard conversation is over. Like the woman above, who is literally sitting up straighter as soon as she puts in notice.

Others were sharing stories of the time they did quite their job, and why it was the best decision they ever made.

Which begs the question — provided you’re lucky enough to have personal circumstances that allow it — why is leaving a job that you dread a bad thing?

And why aren’t there more consequences and shame put on toxic workplaces that can’t keep employees for any length of time, instead of the employees escaping them?

After all, Mama (Prince Harry) said that it was OK.
