Hate being back at work? If you dreaded returning to the office in the new year, it might be time for a new job.

According to the job search website Indeed, 50 per cent of Australian workers plan to look for a new job in 2024.

Amanda Gordon, a workplace psychologist at jobs site Indeed, told news.com.au there are three signs to indicate it’s time to seek out a new opportunity.

Need for a new challenge - “If you feel like there are no more challenges in your current position and challenges are what stimulates you,” Ms Gordon explained.

Working in a toxic environment - “If the environment where you are right now feels toxic to you, unpleasant, making you feel sick or unhappy.

Losing interest in your job - “If the job is no longer grabbing your attention. You can find you can’t find value in what you’re doing.”

Ms Gordon said the right time to pursue a new opportunity is when you can show your work achievements to a potential next employer.

“It’s often tempting to move away when things are bad where you are,” she said.

“But, if there’s a way of really having a couple of good achievements or really knocking over some interesting project before you go, then you’ve got really something to sell yourself in the next role.”

Ms Gordon’s best advice for a job seeker making their next move is to explore their strengths.

“Try and be in a positive frame of mind so that you’re not looking for the negatives where you currently are,” she said.

“You look at what you’ve learned from where you currently are and take that learning with you to the next role.

“Each time you move, it’s not just moving sideways to an equal job.

“But, it’s something that really taps into your strengths and allows you to tap in and feel challenged and excited.”

The survey also revealed that many Australian employees were likely to stay if they’re able to communicate with their boss about their work situation.

Ms Gordon suggested having open discussion with your boss as it makes a job “worthwhile”.

“If you can’t communicate with your boss, it’s probably not worth hanging around,” she said.

“You’ve got to find a way of talking to your boss about what’s going on because often, collaboratively, you can come up with some really good strategies to make it worth staying.”
