Welcome to the Trading Day blog for Thursday, July 31. The ASX 200 closed down 0.2 per cent to 8742.8 points on resources falls, but most sectors rose. US futures soared after Meta and Microsoft released earnings.
In US trading, the Dow Jones index fell 0.4 per cent and the S&P 500 index closed down 0.1 per cent. The technology-focused Nasdaq index closed 0.2 per cent higher before the release of results from Meta and Microsoft, which rose after hours.
Cryptocurrency giant bitcoin was around $US118,700 at 5pm AEST.
The Aussie dollar was trading around US64.70c.
