UberX will be able to pick up passengers at domestic terminals

UBERX drivers will be allowed to operate at Sydney Airport’s domestic terminals, allowing passenger pick-ups for the controversial ride-sharing service later this year.

UberX drivers will have access to the T2 and T3 terminals used by Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Tigerair and Rex.

And airport chiefs are understood to be considering a similar arrangement for the T1 international terminal, which already has a designed pick-up zone for hire cars including UberBlack.

“Sydney Airport is currently developing new arrangements to accommodate all booked service operators at the airport, including ride sharing services such as Uber, as well as limousines and pre-booked taxis” a spokesperson told Australian Business Traveller.

“We’ll be providing further details following consultation with our airport partners.”

UberX drivers were not able to pick up passengers at its international and domestic terminals last year while the service was still declared illegal.

The service became legal in NSW last December.

UberX rides from the airport to Sydney CBD and suburbs are generally held to be 20-30% cheaper than the equivalent taxi fare.

However, it’s expected that UberX drivers will be charged an ‘access fee’ to use the designated T2/T3 pick-up zone.

Taxi drivers currently pay $4.10 to enter Sydney Airport’s pick-up area, with that fee being added to the overall fare at the end of the trip.
