Local legend Rock ‘n’ Roll George was renown figure for generations of Brisbanites driving his FX Holden sedan through the city.

Brisbane’s original rock ‘n’ roll outlaw – whose real name was George Kiprios – became a fixture in city’s night-life cruising around in his Holden in West End, Melbourne St and Queen St for decades – the 1950s to 1980s – with rock ‘n’ roll forever on the radio.

Legends arose around him and it was said he clocked up 160,000km to find a blonde girl he once saw walking through the city. A lost love.

He would park in Queen St, before it was a mall, and stand alongside the Holden – with its personalised Rock `n’ Roll number plates -and socialise at the dances held at Cloudland and dropping in at milk bars and cafes around the city and New Farm.

Kiprios passed away in 2009 aged 82 and he and his beloved Holden took one last lap to his funeral at the Greek Orthodox Church of St George in South Brisbane, attended by local member and then premier Anna Bligh, the rich the famous and his many friends.

Hutchinson Builders later bought his beloved car and it was donated to the Queensland Museum and it was part of its Rock around the Block exhibition.

Now the old FX Holden is back on the move.

Hutchies’ chairman Scott Hutchinson (illustrated) said the museum no longer wanted the car and the Holden was delivered to Hutchies Toowong premises in December.

A special area will be created to display the car at Hutchies office’s reception foyer.

He said Rock ‘n’ Roll George was an important part of Brisbane's social history.

“Rock `n’ Roll George was a Brisbane icon who did laps in the city for over 50 years,” says Hutchinson who would regularly see him around the traps.

“Every adult in Brisbane knew of him and he had four songs written about him.”
