A year after nightclub and live music venue Fat Controller closed its doors for the last time, there are new plans to transform the underground space on North Tce into one of Adelaide’s largest karaoke bars.
K-Box Adelaide will feature a central stage and bar, 16 private karaoke rooms and five solo booths, catering to up to 300 guests across 900sq m of space.
A secondary access point located in the pedestrian tunnel between Roma Mitchell House and the Adelaide Train Station will offer ‘pay-per-use’ karaoke booths, in what Gerald Matthews from Matthews Architects describes as an “innovative setup that fosters a spontaneous karaoke culture, providing a convenient space for impromptu performances ... ideal for those on the go”.
“At the heart of the venue stands a stunning linear central bar, dressed in a warm golden yellow cladding and natural timber; this creates an inviting focal point which draws you into the main common space,” he said.
“Each private karaoke room is a world of its own, boasting individually designed, vibrant decors that promise unforgettable experiences. From sleek sophistication to colourful exuberance, every space is tailored to offer guests a distinct and exciting way to unleash their inner performer.”
The new karaoke offering has been designed by Matthews Architects, and is expected to open its doors to the public towards the end of this year.
K-Box operates three karaoke bars in Melbourne, with the Adelaide launch representing its first foray outside of the Victorian capital.
The owners of Fat Controller shut down the live music venue in December 2023, blaming “industry uncertainty” for the decision.
It operated for eight years, and played host to several big-name music acts over the years, including Boy George and Kristian Nairn, aka Hodor from Game of Thrones.
Before that, the venue ran for 10 years as The Cavern club, inspired by the legendary Liverpool venue where The Beatles made their name.
The K-Box opening follows last year’s launch of the Paradigm Zone entertainment arcade at Gawler Place, featuring what its owners describe as Adelaide’s first self-service karaoke booths.
