Deadly turbulence strikes Singapore Airlines flight

When Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 hit an air pocket and plunged an astonishing 6000ft in just minutes, passengers were terrified as chaos unfolded onboard.

Many have said they had little warning of the turbulence they felt, unable to put their seatbelts on before the aircraft dropped from being 37,000ft in the air over the Andaman Sea.

At the time, the crew were serving breakfast. Food and other items fell on the ground as oxygen masks dropped and some people were “launched into the ceiling”, passengers said.

Andrew Davies, a British passenger told BBC Radio 5 that the plane “suddenly dropped” and there was “very little warning”.

“During the few seconds of the plane dropping, there was an awful screaming and what sounded like a thud,” he said, adding that he helped a woman who was “screaming in agony” with a “gash on her head”.

The shocking incident forced the plane which was en route from London to Singapore, to make an emergency landing at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport.

Of the 211 passengers and 18 crew on board, Thai authorities said 71 people had been sent for treatment, nine of them were Australian. Six were seriously injured.

This is a deeper look into the plane, its damage and the horroric aftermath of the tragic event that occurred, which also killed British grandfather Geoffrey Kitchen, a 73-year-old musical theatre director from South Gloucestershire.
