HE might be in the top 12 highest paid actors in the world with his the last outing in a red cape and carrying a hammer earning him a cool $40 million last year alone.
But Thor actor Chris Hemsworth agreed to a $1.25 million contract to be the face of Tourism Australia for two years with patriotism apparently outweighing his Hollywood star salary command.
Just how much Hemsworth is being paid and the nation’s expected earning from his signing as an “ambassador” for Tourism Australia — notably to star in the spoof Crocodile Dundee film trailer — has been a closely guarded secret.
But buried deep in hundreds of weighty questions-on-notice lodged in federal Parliament’s Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade hearings into military troop deployments, terrorism threats, fraud inquires and diplomatic relations with China and the Koreas is the contract Hemsworth and other stars signed with Tourism Australia.

And they show the nation is to get its money’s worth.
Hemsworth is one of a half dozen stars and celebrities who have signed with TA to promote the country.
According to tabled papers, Hemsworth got paid $1.25 million but since 2016 has delivered an Estimated Advertising Value (EAV) of $170.97 million.
This is not including how much his Dundee ad, played during the Superbowl to 110 million in the US alone, is expected to earn from tourism attraction with the 36-year-old’s appearance worth another $800 million by 2020.
His contractual “responsibilities” were blanked out with a “commercial-in-confidence” mark but according to documents his EAV is based on 5000 media articles with a readership of 16 billion worldwide.
His personal Instagram and Facebook posts on a trip to Kangaroo Island last month alone attracted two million “likes”.
Another to Uluru, Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsundays with his family attracted even more.
“Photos and video taken by Chris and his wife Elsa will be shared with their combined 10 million social media followers as well a similar number of social media fans….” TA’s review noted.
As he gave international interviews about Dundee earlier this year, Hemsworth joked that more people had seen his ad than his films and he would use any excuse to film more in Australia, the country he loved.
In the tabled documents, it was revealed Chinese actor Wu Xiubo was paid $235,000 for a one year campaign to appeal to Chinese tourists to come to Australia with Wallabies larrikin Nick ‘Honey Badger’ Cummins paid $50,000.
Both former Home and Away turned emerging Hollywood star Lincoln Lewis and TV presenter Teigan Nash were each paid $18,000 for seven months TA work.
A TA spokesman described Hemsworth’s worth as having delivered “exceptional results” for Australia.
