Welcome to the Trading Day blog for Tuesday, December 17. The ASX 200 index closed 0.8 per cent higher to 8312 points.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 index rose 0.4 per cent and the technology-focused Nasdaq Composite surged 1.2 per cent to a new record, led by gains by Tesla and Google parent Alphabet. But the Dow Jones index closed 0.3 per cent lower.

Bitcoin is above $US106,000.

The Aussie dollar is trading around US63.51c at 5pm AEDT.
