THE big three supermarkets have launched their latest offensive in the war to attract shoppers, slashing the price of lamb legs, mince and sausages.

Woolworths, Coles and Aldi have engaged in the price war leaving smaller high street butchers struggling to match slashed prices on the supermarket meat shelves.

Woolies alone says it is pouring $45 million a year into reducing meat prices.

After the milk, bread and chicken wars, it’s the latest battle waged by the supermarket chains to grab market share of the nation’s massive $90 billion grocery sector.

Shoppers can now find deals like $4 per kilogram savings on lamb leg roasts, 500 grams of beef sausages for $3.49 or mince for $8/kg.

A comparison of lamb leg roasts at the three chains show them selling for $10/kg at Woolworths, $8.75/kg on special for a short time at Coles and for $9.99/kg at Aldi, according to Channel Nine News.

Woolworths was also advertising pork chops at $15/kg, a $4.99/kg saving.

Prices were being dropped as a direct result of a reduction in wholesale meat prices.

Craig Cook of Prime Quality Meats told Seven News that smaller butchers were struggling to price match the big supermarkets and were losing profits just so they could compete.
