Cheap fares to save Queensland public transport users thousands as new trial to begin

A major change across public transport networks in one state could save locals thousands as a new trial is just a day away from beginning.

Queenslanders are just one day away from cheap public transport fares as a new trial aimed at easing the cost of living and traffic gridlocks across the state kicks off.

From Monday, commuters will only be required to pay a 50 cent flat rate when travelling on South East Queensland buses, trains, ferries, trams and regional urban bus services.

The Queensland government, which faces a state election at the end of October, says the six-month long trial could save some public transport users thousands in the coming months.

As locals make the most of the cheap fares, the government is anticipating an increased number of passengers across all services.

South East Queensland public transport users are advised to use the newly upgraded Service Capacity Tracker, to check whether there will be space for them to travel on their desired service.

The government is warning the new fares and a subsequent increase in the number of public transport users could also affect the availability of parking spaces near public transport hubs.

Travellers will still be required to tap on and off with their Go card during their journey or purchase a paper ticket.

“It might be a little busier than usual, so remember – be patient, be cool, be safe and make use of the tips that TransLink have put together to make your journey more comfortable,” he said.

Mr Mellish encouraged Queenslanders to “make the most” of the cheap fares by not only visiting places in South East Queensland but also using the state’s regional bus network.

Department of Transport and Main Roads director general Sally Stannard encouraged public transport users to plan ahead.

“We know people are excited for the 50 cent fares trial but we also want to ensure a positive experience for both new and existing public transport users, so it’s important to plan your journey in advance and have your preferred payment method ready,” she said.

“It’s important to remember this is a trial and TransLink will monitor all aspects of it closely to inform future decisions around services and fares.”
