Coalition's net zero deal will 'look after' the regions, insists Barnaby Joyce

Sparks are bound to fly when tech billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes and Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce debate the path to net zero at this year’s Daily Telegraph Bush Summit.

The Nationals leader has put up a strong fight against Australia’s targets ahead of the Prime Minister’s trip to the COP26 Climate Change Conference in Glasgow so will be in full flight.

But he was adamant he does not support a shorter-term target, despite many advanced economies focusing on more aggressive 2030 targets, because Australia has “different economies to them”.

“Our biggest export is iron ore, and then come fossil fuels: gas, coal,” Mr Joyce said last week whereas other nations like France relies on nuclear power and England’s economy which is buoyed by a booming financial sector.

Cannon-Brookes may have made his fortune as co-founder ad CEO of Atlassian but renewable energy is his passion and he wants our leaders to feel the same way.

Last week Cannon-Brookes called on corporate Australia to follow his lead and pour money into climate initiatives, after he and his wife Annie committed to invest $1.5bn into climate projects by 2030.

“From a climate perspective it’s absolutely what we do in the next eight to 10 years that makes a difference, and from an economics perspective, if we don’t start changing the Australian economy to harness those opportunities that we have in decarbonisation in Australia, then other countries will accept those opportunities and it’ll be much more competitive and difficult for us to win in those areas as an economy, and that will be very sad because that’s a lot of downside,” he said.
