Obliterating red tape preventing more workers getting to the bush, making regional internet and phone access a national priority, and upgrading freight bottlenecks are among the key action points to come from the 2022 Bush Summit.

This year’s Bush Summit – The Daily Telegraph’s fourth – was held in Griffith on August 26 and brought together the major players from the political and business worlds as well as regional experts in health, communications and farming.

The action-points are set to be shared with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Premier Dominic Perrottet by Daily Telegraph editor Ben English.

“This communique has proved to be a vital cog in the bush summit’s success in bringing about meaningful change for the bush,” Mr English said.

“It’s based on the insights we gave from speaking to all stakeholders on the ground.

“It’s proved invaluable since we launched the Bush Summit in 2019.

“It enables us to keep all levels of government accountable to rural and regional NSW.”

The Daily Telegraph has never paid lip service to the bush and instead has highlighted serious areas in need of reform and investment – with successful steps including the pushing for a NSW regional health Minister, as well as highlighting the need for record investment in major water projects like the raising of Wyangala Dam wall.

Among the steps recommended for prioritisation by the federal and state governments in the 2022 Bush Summit communique are the introduction of a Regional Incentive Scheme.

That would involve in the next 12 months fast-tracking the introduction of a regional incentive or tax relief scheme to encourage people with essential skills to live and work in regional communities.

The communique also recommends implementing an Accelerated Worker Visa Pathway – which would reinvigorate the working holiday-maker visa scheme and explore new and fast-tracked visa options for skilled and semi-skilled workers with clearer pathways to permanent residency and citizenship.

Upgrading freight bottlenecks to increase the international competitiveness of our regional produce by reducing unnecessary costs, as well as investing in telecommunications enabling rural Australians to work from anywhere in the vast country.
