William Tyrrell: NSW Police search Kendall yard where toddler vanished

The NSW Police Minister has delivered a poignant message about William Tyrrell but refused to be drawn on one new theory.

New William Tyrrell Search

The NSW Police Minister has said he hopes the new search for missing boy William Tyrrell will give his family and the community closure.

“There is an unusually high level of community anxiety because everybody knows a little William,” David Elliott told reporters on Tuesday.

But he would not be drawn on reports police were investigating whether William might have fallen to his death from a balcony at the home where he vanished as a three-year-old in 2014.

“Well, it’s a matter for those that have been involved in the investigation,” Mr Elliott said.

“I think what you’ll find with a mysterious incident like this, is that every single option has to be investigated, every single scenario needs to be reviewed, and then tested.

“Let’s hope that whatever the conclusion is, it gives closure to the families and the community.”

Mr Elliott spoke on day two of the renewed search.

Police earlier confirmed they were using a cadaver dog to comb a garden bed at the property where William was last seen more than seven years ago.

Pictures released by NSW Police showed officers sifting through dirt in the yard of the Kendall home.

Police have said they are looking for the boy’s remains and that three locations are of particular interest.

The force also confirmed there was one suspect being eyed.

“My understanding from the investigators is that there is certainly one person in particular that we are looking closely at,” NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said.

Mr Elliott said the Rural Fire Service had been called in to help with the search, specifically looking for “disturbed ground”.

“We’ve got an excellent Rural Fire Service here in NSW,” he said.

“They are experts in managing the ground, in identifying any soil that may have been moved, in any ground that’s been disturbed, and that’s what they are looking out for.”

Mr Elliott said police had never given up on finding William.

“There’s a record $1m reward so I hope we see this come to a conclusion,” he said.

“We wouldn’t be promoting the reward if we didn’t think it was a useful tool.

“When we announced it five years ago, we knew someone was holding back information.”

There’s been no trace of William since he vanished in 2014 but images of the youngster were circulated across Australia.
