West Kempsey: Police officer suffers ‘serious leg injuries’ in savage dog attack

A police officer has been bitten by a dog and sustained shocking injuries in a horror attack on the NSW mid north coast.

A woman is accused of releasing her dog from a backyard on the state’s mid north coast before it attacked a police officer.

Police were called to a home on Roscoe Turner Street in West Kempsey just before 3pm on Sunday following reports of a domestic violence incident.

Detectives spoke to a 34-year-old woman who allegedly threatened an officer with a metal pole before releasing a dog from the backyard.

Police tried to arrest the woman before the dog attacked one of the officers, biting them on the right calf and thigh.

The officer was rushed to Kempsey Base Hospital with serious leg injuries.

Detectives took the woman to the local police station where she was charged with two counts of intimidation (domestic violence), armed with intent, resisting arrest and dog attacking a person due to a reckless act from the person in charge.

She was refused bail and will appear at Kempsey Local Court on Monday.

The incident comes less than 24 hours after a police sergeant was bitten by a dog in Sydney’s southwest after investigating another domestic-related incident.

Detectives spoke with a 59-year-old woman at a home in Georges Hall, while a 52-year-old man barricaded himself in the rear of a garage with a dog.

He was eventually arrested, but while detectives were speaking with the woman, who had secured the canine, it bit a police officer on the face.

The council has seized the dog.
