A 29-year-old man has been charged after allegedly stealing a vehicle and driving on the wrong side of the road through traffic in a bid to dodge police.
It happened in Perth’s southern suburbs on Wednesday morning, with the driver allegedly mounting footpaths and speeding as other motorists were forced to take evasive action.
Police said a VW Amarok utility, which had been stolen during a commercial burglary in Bibra Lake that morning, was spotted on Thomas Road in Medina about 8.10am.
The driver allegedly failed to stop and sped off, with officers losing sight of the vehicle.
A short time later, a police helicopter crew spotted the ute and kept an eye on it as the man allegedly drove through the suburbs of Wellard, Hillman and East Rockingham.
“It will be further alleged the stolen vehicle was driven in a reckless manner, including on a footpath and at high speed on the wrong side of the road, causing several other motorists to take evasive action to avoid being hit,” police said.
After abandoning the vehicle in bushland near Mandurah Road, the driver ran away but was arrested a short time later.
The Parmelia man has been charged with a string of offences including stealing a vehicle, failing to stop, reckless driving, no authority to drive, possessing drug paraphernalia and breaching a family violence restraining order.
He was refused bail and is scheduled to face Rockingham Magistrates Court later on Thursday.
