A star in a classic Aussie film is making a surprise career move in a massive departure from the silver screen.

Strictly Ballroom actor Paul Mercurio to run for Victoria state parliament

Star of classic Aussie film Strictly Ballroom turned entrepreneur Paul Mercurio has won preselection to run as a Labor candidate in Victorian state election.

The actor and dancer – who was also a judge on Dancing with the Stars – put his hand up for the seat of Hastings in Melbourne’s outer south east and his preselection was confirmed on Monday afternoon.

The 58-year-old is a councillor for the Mornington Peninsula Shire and an entrepreneur who runs his own food business selling spices and chutney.

Mr Mercurio starred in Baz Luhrmann’s film Strictly Ballroom as the rebellious dancer Scott Hastings and went onto roles in Neighbours and Blue Heelers.
