Police appeal for assistance after man seriously injured during assault in Melbourne

Police are appealing to the public for assistance to find a skateboarder who may have information about a serious assault.

Grainy pictures of a man on a skateboard could be the key to solving an investigation into an assault in Melbourne last month that left a man badly injured and with damaged vision.

Victoria Police has released images of a man they believe may be able to assist them with their investigation as they ask the public for help in finding the offender behind the assault in Brighton on March 30.

Investigators have been told the man who was assaulted was driving on Normanby St in the beachside suburb about 12.30pm when he came up behind a younger man on an electric skateboard.

The 64-year-old driver beeped the skateboarder, letting him know he was behind him for safety reasons, police said.

Police said the skateboarder approached the vehicle on The Esplanade, banging on the car and verbally abusing the passenger and driver.

The driver got out to try to calm the situation down before walking back to his car.

The man was struck multiple times from behind and continued to be assaulted when he fell to the ground, police said.

Police have said the victim, a Brighton man, suffered significant injuries, including a fractured eye socket, causing him to lose part of his vision.

The skateboarder headed off towards Brighton baths in the Elwood direction, police said.

He is described as aged in his late teens to early 20s, medium build and was wearing a white T-shirt, grey shorts and Nike shoes.

Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.
