Missing hiker found in remote Victorian high country

An Irish national who has been missing for four days in the remote Victorian high country has been found, police have said.

An Irish national has been found four days after he failed to return from a hike in the remote Victorian high country, Victoria Police have said.

Colin, whose surname was not released by police, was due to finish his hike and return to Omeo, about five hours east of Melbourne, on March 31.

Police said the 34-year-old failed to finish his hike, with concerns over his welfare heightened when his car was found unattended in Omeo on Monday morning.

They confirmed on Tuesday that air wing, the search and rescue squad, as well as Parks Victoria, had been engaged in the search for the missing hiker, who had started on the McMillans Walking Track on March 19.

On Wednesday, a spokesperson for Victoria Police said police had “spoken to a man” they believed to be Colin however had not formally sighted him, which they expected to do on Wednesday afternoon.

McMillans track is a notoriously difficult hike that skirts the southern edge of the Australian Alps for more than 200km.

The hike generally takes around two weeks.
