Melbourne’s morning commute has been thrown into chaos after a station was closed and a train line completely suspended.

Three other lines also faced delays of up to 30 minutes after a person being hit by a train near South Yarra station.

The Sandringham train line between Ripponlea and Prahran stations was suspended for almost three hours while emergency services respond to the incident.

South Yarra station was also closed for more than an hour with no trains allowed to stop at the platforms.

“We’ve been just advised by Victoria Police that we are required to close the station to the public while ongoing investigations take place,” Metro Trains said.

Buses were sent to replace trains from Elsternwick station and ferry passengers to Caulfield station.

Metro Trains said the replacement buses took about 60 minutes to arrive at Elsternwick and connected passengers with the Pakenham, Cranbourne and Frankston line trains at Caulfield.

“Passengers between Ripponlea and Prahran are advised to consider local tram and bus services,” Metro said.

Route 64 trams were also diverted via Balaclava Road between stop 30 St Kilda Junction and stop 51 Balaclava Road.

The Cranbourne, Frankston and Pakenham lines also faced delays of up to 30 minutes due to the incident.
