Human remains were found at two beaches on the NSW mid-north coast on Monday morning.
Police made the grisly find at Little Bay near Lighthouse Beach and the nearby Miners Beach in Port Macquarie.
The remains will be sent for forensic examination, with police awaiting results before they are able to formally confirm the identity of the person.
Monday’s find comes more than a week after Mark James, 56, disappeared at Lighthouse Beach.
It is not yet known if the remains found on the beach are linked to Mr James’s disappearance.
Police spent days searching the land and water for the man to no avail after his family found his red RAV4 at Tacking Point lighthouse.
The search had been assisted by Polair, Surf Lifesaving NSW, Marine Rescue and the State Emergency Service.
